The Holy Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024 and will end just prior to the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 29, 2024, when the Paschal Triduum begins. Lent is the principal penitential season in the Church year. All Christian Faithful are urged to develop and maintain a program of self-denial, prayer, and the performance of deeds of charity and mercy (including giving of alms), in keeping with the spirit of the season.
Pope Francis writes, “To the extent that this Lent becomes a time of conversion, an anxious humanity will notice a burst of creativity, a flash of new hope…. Such is the courage of conversion, born of coming up from slavery. For faith and charity take hope, this small child, by the hand. They teach her to walk, and at the same time, she leads them forward.”
On Ash Wednesday, the Mass features a blessing and imposition of ashes upon the foreheads of the faithful. For many, this is a deeply meaningful sign of human mortality and dependence on God’s mercy. It is this spirit of self-denial and dying to this world that opens the human heart for the mystery of renewal and resurrection.
