The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day of Obligation, celebrating the day when Mary, as a special favor from Jesus, her son, was conceived without sin. In celebrating this mystery, we recognize that not only was Mary a worthy vessel to carry the Christ child, but that her soul and will totally lacked the concupiscence that leads us into sin, making her “yes” to the Angel Gabriel (Luke 1:26ff) so perfect as to allow the Divine Word to become Flesh within her. It is through her ministry to the Church that we receive the Christ Child at Christmas, and we have an exemplar in faith and virtue, showing us the power of perfect cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
